Lisäysvirheet, often translated as insertion errors, are a type of genetic mutation where one or more nucleotides are added to a DNA sequence. These errors can occur during DNA replication or repair processes. Unlike point mutations that substitute a single nucleotide, insertions involve the addition of extra genetic material. The size of an insertion can vary greatly, from a single base pair to thousands of base pairs.

The consequences of an insertion error depend heavily on its location within the genome and its size. If an insertion occurs within a gene and is not a multiple of three nucleotides, it can cause a frameshift mutation. This shifts the reading frame of the genetic code, leading to the translation of a completely different sequence of amino acids from that point onwards, often resulting in a non-functional protein. Insertions that are multiples of three nucleotides may add extra amino acids to a protein, which can alter its structure and function.

Insertions can also occur in non-coding regions of DNA. While these may not directly affect protein sequences, they can still have significant impacts by altering gene regulation, such as affecting the binding of transcription factors or influencing the splicing of RNA. The phenotypic effects of insertion errors range from no observable change to severe genetic disorders and diseases, depending on the gene affected and the nature of the insertion. Detecting and understanding insertion errors is crucial in genetic research and diagnostics.
