The primary reproductive organs, or gonads, produce gametes: sperm in males and ova (eggs) in females. They also produce hormones that regulate sexual development and function. In males, the gonads are the testes, which produce sperm and testosterone. Sperm are transported through a series of ducts to the exterior of the body. In females, the gonads are the ovaries, which produce ova and hormones like estrogen and progesterone. The female reproductive tract is designed to receive sperm, facilitate fertilization, and support the development of a fetus during pregnancy. The process of reproduction typically involves the union of a sperm cell and an ovum through fertilization, forming a zygote. This zygote then develops into an embryo and later a fetus, which grows within the female reproductive organs until birth. The development and function of the reproductive system are influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Variations exist across different species, but the fundamental role of enabling the continuation of the species through sexual reproduction remains constant.
