Steroids, characterized by a specific four-ring structure, include important compounds like cholesterol, sex hormones, and corticosteroids. This hierarchical classification helps scientists understand the diverse roles of lipids in biological systems, from energy storage and structural components of membranes to signaling molecules and vitamins.
