Lipidmolekylene, often referred to as lipid molecules or simply lipids, are a diverse group of organic compounds that are essential components of all living organisms. They are characterized by their insolubility in water and solubility in organic solvents. This hydrophobic nature is due to their structure, which primarily consists of long hydrocarbon chains. Lipids serve a wide range of crucial biological functions, including energy storage, structural components of cell membranes, and signaling molecules.

One of the most well-known types of lipid molecules is fats, also known as triglycerides. These are formed from a glycerol backbone esterified with three fatty acids. Fatty acids themselves are long chains of carbon atoms with a carboxyl group at one end. They can be saturated, meaning they contain no carbon-carbon double bonds, or unsaturated, containing one or more carbon-carbon double bonds. The presence and configuration of these double bonds significantly influence the physical properties of the lipid.

Another important class of lipids are phospholipids, which are the primary building blocks of cell membranes. Phospholipids have a hydrophilic (water-loving) head group, typically containing a phosphate group, and two hydrophobic fatty acid tails. This amphipathic nature allows them to form a bilayer structure in aqueous environments, creating a barrier that separates the cell's interior from its exterior. Steroids, such as cholesterol and steroid hormones, are another significant group of lipid molecules characterized by a four-ring carbon structure. They play vital roles in membrane fluidity, hormone production, and vitamin synthesis.
