Linjeföräldrar is a term used in genetics and breeding to refer to the parents from which a breeding line is started. The word combines linje (line) and föräldrar (parents). Linjeföräldrar are selected to establish a known genetic baseline for a line that will be propagated across generations. In plant and animal breeding, these individuals are used to produce the initial offspring that define the line’s traits. The goal is to fix desirable characteristics while maintaining a degree of predictability in future generations.

In practice, linjeföräldrar may be chosen to introduce or preserve certain alleles, to create a stable genetic background, or to increase resemblance among line members. After the linjeföräldrar produce the first generation, subsequent generations (often labeled F1, F2, or other designations in line-breeding programs) inherit the line’s characteristics. The process can involve controlled mating, selection, and sometimes inbreeding to raise uniformity, though care is taken to avoid excessive loss of genetic diversity.
