It involves converting a sequence of binary digits (bits) into a signal that can be transmitted and then decoded back into the original binary sequence at the receiving end. This process is crucial for ensuring that the transmitted data is accurately and efficiently conveyed, especially over noisy or lossy channels.

The primary goals of lijncodering are to maintain synchronization between the transmitter and receiver, minimize the number of transitions in the signal to reduce bandwidth requirements, and ensure that the signal contains sufficient transitions to maintain clock recovery at the receiver. Common line coding schemes include Non-Return-to-Zero (NRZ), Manchester, Differential Manchester, and 4B5B. NRZ is the simplest form, where a binary '1' is represented by one voltage level and a binary '0' by another. Manchester encoding, on the other hand, uses a transition in the middle of each bit period to encode the data, providing a self-clocking signal. Differential Manchester encoding adds an additional transition at the beginning of each bit period, further enhancing synchronization. The 4B5B encoding scheme is used in Ethernet to ensure sufficient transitions and to handle the transmission of long sequences of identical bits.
