The musculoskeletal system, known in Finnish as the liikuntaelinjärjestelmä, is the complex network of muscles, bones, joints, and connective tissues that enables movement, provides support, and protects internal organs. It is a vital system for everyday activities, from walking and grasping objects to maintaining posture and performing intricate physical tasks.

The skeletal component of the system provides the body's framework. Bones offer rigidity and strength, serve as attachment points for muscles, and house bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. Joints are the articulations between bones, allowing for a range of motion. These can be classified by their degree of movement, from immovable sutures in the skull to freely movable synovial joints found in the limbs.

Muscles are responsible for generating force to produce movement. Skeletal muscles, which are under voluntary control, contract and relax, pulling on bones via tendons. This coordinated action allows for locomotion and manipulation of the environment. Smooth muscles, found in internal organs, and cardiac muscle, which forms the heart, are involuntary and perform essential functions like digestion and blood circulation, respectively.

Connective tissues, such as ligaments and cartilage, play crucial roles in the musculoskeletal system. Ligaments connect bones to other bones, providing stability to joints, while cartilage acts as a shock absorber and smooth surface within joints, reducing friction. Tendons attach muscles to bones, transmitting the force generated by muscle contraction. Together, these components work in synergy to facilitate movement, maintain posture, and protect the body.
