Lihassäikeille refers to muscle fibers in Finnish. Muscle fibers are the individual cells that make up skeletal muscle tissue. These cells are elongated and multinucleated, meaning they contain many nuclei. They are the fundamental units responsible for muscle contraction and thus for movement in the body.

Muscle fibers are categorized into different types based on their contractile speed, metabolic properties, and resistance to fatigue. The primary types are slow-twitch (Type I) and fast-twitch (Type II) fibers. Slow-twitch fibers are efficient at using oxygen and are resistant to fatigue, making them ideal for endurance activities like long-distance running. Fast-twitch fibers contract more forcefully and quickly but fatigue faster, being better suited for short bursts of intense activity such as sprinting or weightlifting.

The structure of a muscle fiber is complex, containing specialized organelles. Myofibrils, which are long filaments composed of actin and myosin proteins, run the length of the fiber. The interaction of these filaments during the sliding filament theory is the basis of muscle contraction. Each muscle fiber is also surrounded by a connective tissue sheath called the endomysium. The arrangement and proportion of different muscle fiber types within a muscle can influence an individual's athletic capabilities and can be influenced by training.
