Lihassäikeiksi is a Finnish term that translates to "muscle fibers" in English. Muscle fibers are the basic structural and functional units of skeletal muscle tissue. They are elongated, multinucleated cells that are specialized for contraction. Each muscle fiber is surrounded by a membrane called the sarcolemma, and within the sarcoplasm, or cytoplasm, are numerous myofibrils. These myofibrils are composed of repeating units called sarcomeres, which are the fundamental contractile elements of the muscle.

Muscle fibers are classified into different types based on their speed of contraction, fatigue resistance, and metabolic characteristics. The main types are slow-twitch (Type I) fibers, which are highly resistant to fatigue and are used for endurance activities, and fast-twitch (Type II) fibers, which contract more forcefully and rapidly but fatigue more quickly. Fast-twitch fibers are further subdivided into Type IIa and Type IIx (or IIb in some classifications).

The contraction of muscle fibers is initiated by a nerve impulse transmitted from a motor neuron to the neuromuscular junction. This triggers a series of events within the muscle fiber that leads to the sliding of actin and myosin filaments past each other, resulting in muscle shortening and force generation. The arrangement and coordinated action of billions of lihassäikeiksi allow for the diverse range of movements performed by the body, from fine motor skills to powerful exertions. Their structure and function are crucial for locomotion, posture, and heat production.
