libanais

Libanais is the French term for a person from Lebanon and, as an adjective, for anything pertaining to Lebanon (Libanais cuisine, Libanais culture). In English, the corresponding term is Lebanese.

Lebanon is a country in the Eastern Mediterranean, bordered by Syria to the north and east and Israel to the south, with a coastline along the sea. Its capital and largest city is Beirut. The population is diverse, comprising multiple religious communities, including Muslims (Sunni and Shia), Christians (Maronite, Eastern Orthodox, and others), and Druze, along with sizeable Armenian and other minority communities.

Lebanese society is characterized by linguistic diversity. Arabic is the official language; Lebanese Arabic is widely spoken in daily life. French and English are also widely used in education, media, business, and daily communication.

Lebanon's modern history features ancient roots in Phoenician civilization; it became a French mandate after World War I and gained independence in 1943. The country experienced a civil war from 1975 to 1990 and has since rebuilt around a confessional political system that shares power among religious groups.

The Lebanese diaspora is large, with communities in the Americas, Europe, Africa, and the Gulf states. Lebanese cuisine, music, and arts have gained global recognition.
