Lexogènes is a term used in linguistics to refer to the agents and processes that generate or modify a language’s lexicon—the inventory of words and their meanings. The concept aims to capture how new words arise, how senses shift, and how lexical items spread through a speech community. Although not universally standardized, the label highlights the causal role of social, cultural, and cognitive factors in shaping vocabulary.

Etymologically, the word combines lexis, meaning word or language, with -gène, signaling production or origin. In practice, lexogènes encompass external influences such as language contact, migration, media, and technology, as well as internal processes like metaphorical extension, semantic broadening or narrowing, back-formation, compounding, and derivational productivity. Borrowings and calques are common examples, as are neologisms formed in response to new concepts or technologies (for instance, terms tied to digital life). The diffusion of slang and meme-driven vocabulary can also be viewed as lexogenic, since social networks accelerate adoption and modification of words.

In research, lexogènes are used to frame discussions of lexical diffusion, lexical borrowing, and neology without requiring a single mechanism to dominate lexicon change. They are often contrasted with more narrow notions of word formation or with purely internal semantic shifts. Critics note that the term can be umbrella-like and overlapping with established concepts such as lexicogenesis, neology, and language contact. Nevertheless, lexogènes provide a concise way to discuss the diverse forces that shape vocabulary over time.
