The term is used in discussions of multilingual lexicography and lexical semantics to underline interlanguage compatibility and comparability.

Within a lexicona, an entry comprises the lemma, language, part of speech, a set of senses with glosses, usage examples, and morphological information, plus frequency data and cross-language mappings to translation equivalents, cognates, or semantic relations. Senses are aligned via semantic features or primitives so that related meanings across languages can be examined in parallel.

Lexiconas relate to existing resources such as WordNet, BabelNet, and Open Multilingual WordNet, but aim to provide a more explicit, network-like representation where cross-linguistic links are central and disambiguation is shared across languages.
