Lexical derivational refers to the set of processes by which new lexical items are formed from existing bases through derivational morphemes. In linguistics, it is distinguished from inflectional morphology, which marks grammatical features but often leaves the core meaning and category unchanged. Derivational processes typically create words with related but extended meanings and frequently alter the word’s grammatical category.

The primary mechanisms are affixation and related morphological operations. Prefixes and suffixes are the most common tools, as in unhappy (un- + happy) and happiness (happy + -ness). Other productive derivational suffixes include -er, -ment, -able, and -ize, which can shift a base noun or verb into another part of speech or add a thematic nuance. Some languages also use infixes or circumfixes, and compounding can function as a derivational strategy when it yields new lexical items rather than simple syntactic combinations.

Conversion or zero-derivation is another important route, where a word changes category without an overt affix, producing new uses within the same form, such as a noun becoming a verb (drive as a noun and as a verb). Derivation can bring semantic shifts beyond simple addition of meaning, including changes in valency, aspect, or agentivity (e.g., teacher from teach).

Lexical derivation plays a central role in expanding the lexicon and shaping word formation patterns across languages. Productivity, restrictions, and historical change influence which derivational forms are common, borrowed, or lost over time.
