Levälajit, or algae species, encompass a vast and diverse group of photosynthetic organisms. While often microscopic, some can grow quite large, forming extensive underwater forests. They are found in virtually every aquatic environment, from freshwater lakes and rivers to the open ocean and even damp soil. Algae play a crucial role in ecosystems, producing a significant portion of the Earth's oxygen through photosynthesis and forming the base of many food webs.

There are several major groups of algae, categorized by their pigment composition and cellular structure. These include green algae (Chlorophyta), which share common ancestors with land plants, and red algae (Rhodophyta), often found in deeper marine waters. Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are characterized by their intricate silica cell walls, and dinoflagellates (Dinophyta) are known for their motility and role in phenomena like red tides. Brown algae (Phaeophyceae), such as kelp, are exclusively marine and can form massive habitats.

Humans utilize algae in numerous ways. They are a source of food, rich in vitamins and minerals, and are used in the production of biofuels, fertilizers, and even pharmaceuticals. Certain algal blooms, however, can be detrimental, causing oxygen depletion in water bodies and producing toxins harmful to aquatic life and humans. The study of algae, known as phycology, is essential for understanding aquatic ecosystems and harnessing their potential benefits while mitigating their risks.
