Leptonantileptons, also known as leptons and antileptons, are fundamental particles that are members of the lepton family. The Standard Model of particle physics classifies leptons into six types: the electron, muon, tau, and their corresponding neutrinos. Each of these leptons has an antiparticle, which is identical in mass but has an opposite electric charge and other quantum numbers. For example, the antiparticle of the electron is the positron, and the antiparticle of the electron neutrino is the electron antineutrino.

Leptons and antileptons interact via the weak nuclear force and, if charged, also through the electromagnetic force. They do not participate in the strong nuclear force. The neutrino and antineutrino are electrically neutral and interact only through the weak force, making them notoriously difficult to detect. The electron and positron are common examples of lepton-antilepton pairs. When a lepton and its corresponding antilepton meet, they can annihilate each other, converting their mass into energy, typically in the form of photons. Conversely, energy can also be converted into a lepton-antilepton pair through a process known as pair production, provided sufficient energy is available. Understanding the behavior and interactions of leptonantileptons is crucial for comprehending the fundamental structure of matter and the forces that govern the universe.
