Leksykografie, known in English as lexicography, is the scholarly discipline and practice of compiling dictionaries and other lexical reference works. It covers the description of a language’s lexis, the selection of vocabulary for inclusion, the organization of meanings and senses, and the presentation of information such as pronunciation, etymology, part of speech, and usage examples. Modern lexicography tends toward descriptive approaches, documenting how language is actually used, though historical and some normative traditions influence certain dictionaries.

Dictionaries can be monolingual, bilingual, or multilingual, and may target general language, specialized domains, or historical stages. The lexicographer’s workflow typically includes corpus collection and analysis, sense distinction and ordering, definition writing, citation of usage examples, etymology research, and the design of user-friendly interfaces in digital dictionaries.

Historically, lexicography evolved from glossaries and word lists to comprehensive national dictionaries and modern online references. The field has been transformed by computational methods, large corpora, and digital publishing, enabling frequent updates, semantic networks, and API access. Subfields include historical lexicography, computational lexicography, and lexicography of signs and slang.

Leksykografie supports language learning, translation, lexicological research, and language policy. It faces challenges such as language change, the inclusion of neologisms, diachronic variation, cultural bias, and balancing scholarly rigor with accessibility and practicality.
