Lehestruktuure refers to the arrangement and organization of leaves on a plant stem. This arrangement is not random but follows specific patterns that are crucial for optimizing light capture, gas exchange, and overall plant efficiency. The primary types of leaf arrangement are alternate, opposite, and whorled.

In an alternate arrangement, a single leaf arises from each node on the stem, and these leaves are typically staggered. This spacing helps to minimize self-shading, allowing each leaf to receive a greater amount of sunlight. Examples include many common flowering plants and trees.

An opposite arrangement occurs when two leaves arise from the same node, directly across from each other on the stem. Often, these leaves are arranged in pairs, with subsequent pairs at right angles to the preceding ones, a pattern known as decussate. This arrangement can also be effective for light interception. Many herbaceous plants and some shrubs exhibit opposite leaf structures.

A whorled arrangement is less common, where three or more leaves originate from the same node. This dense arrangement can be advantageous in environments with high light intensity, as it can help to shade lower leaves or provide a greater surface area for photosynthesis within a compact space. Plants like horsetails and certain aquatic species display whorled leaf structures.
