Legitiimiys refers to the perceived rightfulness or acceptance of an authority, institution, or system. It is the belief that a ruler or government has the right to rule and that its laws and decisions are valid and should be obeyed. Legitimacy is not the same as legality, though the two are often closely linked. A government can be legal but not legitimate, or vice versa.

There are several theories about the sources of legitimacy. Max Weber famously identified three types of legitimate authority: traditional, charismatic, and rational-legal. Traditional authority is based on established customs and traditions. Charismatic authority stems from the personal qualities and appeal of a leader. Rational-legal authority is derived from established laws and procedures.

In contemporary political science, legitimacy is often understood as resting on popular consent. Governments that are seen as representing the will of the people, protecting their rights, and providing public goods tend to be more legitimate. Legitimacy can be eroded by corruption, oppression, economic inequality, and a lack of responsiveness to public needs. Maintaining legitimacy is crucial for the stability and effectiveness of any political system. It underpins public trust and cooperation, making governance smoother and more sustainable.
