Leafställen is a term used in botany and ecology to describe the placement of leaves along a plant stem—the positions at which leaves emerge and their spatial pattern around the axis. It covers both the vertical distribution along the stem and the angular arrangement, and is closely related to the technical concept of phyllotaxy, though leafställen is often used to discuss functional and structural aspects of shoot architecture.

Leafställen can follow several common patterns: alternate, where one leaf sits per node in a zigzag along the stem; opposite, where two leaves arise directly opposite each other at a node; and whorled, where three or more leaves share a node. Spiral or distichous arrangements describe more continuous angular patterns. Variation occurs due to genetics, ontogeny, light environment, and mechanical constraints, leading to diverse canopy architectures even within a species.

Understanding leafställen helps in canopy modeling, photosynthesis optimization, and breeding for light interception. In forestry and horticulture, analyzing leafställen supports predictions of light penetration, leaf area index, and growth forms.
