The Latins, or Latins in Latin sources, were an ancient Italic people who inhabited Latium, the central-western region of Italy surrounding the future site of Rome. They lived in a cluster of related urban communities and rural settlements, with the city of Alba Longa and Lavinium among the best known early centers. The Latins spoke an Italic language that evolved into Latin.

A key feature of Latin political life was the Latin League, a loose confederation of city-states that shared religious rites and certain military and political interests. Over time, one Latin community—Rome—became dominant, absorbing others and transforming its authority into the Roman state. By the 4th century BCE, Romans and other Latins were integrated under Roman rule, while Latin cultural and linguistic influence spread across Latium and, eventually, the entire Italian peninsula.

Language and culture were central to Latin identity. Latin gave rise to the Latin language, which became the lingua franca of the Roman Republic and Empire and laid the foundation for the Romance languages (including Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian). Latin literature, law, and religious forms deeply shaped Western civilization. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Latin remained a scholarly and liturgical language in Europe and continued to influence many cultures and institutions.

In modern usage, the term Latins is primarily a historical designation for this ancient group. In broader contexts, it can refer to Romance-language-speaking peoples or, in some regions, to cultural or linguistic families linked to Latin heritage. The Latins are thus regarded as a foundational Italic group whose language and culture profoundly influenced later European civilization.
