Romancelanguagespeaking refers to individuals and communities who use Romance languages, a family of Indo-European languages derived from Vulgar Latin. The core members are Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, and Romanian, with numerous regional languages and varieties such as Catalan, Galician, Occitan, Sardinian, and Romansh also classified within the Romance group. The term encompasses both native speakers and multilingual individuals who routinely communicate in one or more Romance languages. The Romance languages are among the most widely spoken in the world, with hundreds of millions of native speakers and substantial second-language use.

Romance-language speaking communities are distributed worldwide, notably in Europe, the Americas, Africa, and parts of Asia. In Europe, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Italian, Romanian and regional varieties are common. In the Americas, Spanish and Portuguese predominate; French is official in parts of the Caribbean and Canada. In Africa, French and Portuguese serve as official or widely used languages in several countries. In Asia, Romance languages exist mainly in diaspora contexts and cultural interactions.

Linguistically, Romance languages share a common origin in Vulgar Latin, which yields similar core features such as gendered nouns and conjugated verbs, a sizable shared vocabulary, and analogous systems of articles and tense forms. Despite these similarities, phonology, syntax, and lexicon have diverged, resulting in varying degrees of mutual intelligibility among languages and dialects. Regional varieties can be highly differentiated, leading some communities to regard certain varieties as distinct languages.

Sociolinguically, many Romance languages have standardized forms used in education, media, and government. Multilingualism, language policy, and cultural heritage influence their status and transmission, while globalization and migration continue to expand their presence as both first and second languages worldwide.
