A lateralfricative is a type of consonant sound produced by forcing air through a narrow channel along the sides of the tongue. The airflow is obstructed in the center of the mouth by raising the tongue, but the sides are lowered, allowing air to escape. This creates a fricative sound, characterized by turbulence.

There are voiced and voiceless lateralfricatives. The voiceless lateral fricative is represented by the symbol ɬ in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The voiced lateral fricative is represented by the symbol ɮ in the IPA. These sounds are relatively uncommon in the world's languages compared to other fricatives.

Examples of languages that feature lateralfricatives include Welsh, which has both a voiceless ɬ (written as 'll') and a voiced ɮ (written as 'hl' in some dialectal transcriptions). Zulu and Xhosa, both Nguni languages, also prominently feature lateral fricatives, often as initial consonants in words. These sounds can be challenging for speakers of languages that do not possess them to produce or distinguish.

The production of a lateralfricative involves a complex coordination of the tongue and airflow. The tongue tip or blade makes contact with the alveolar ridge or palate, creating a central obstruction, while the sides of the tongue are held away from the molars, allowing air to escape and create friction. The distinction between a lateralfricative and a lateral approximant (like the 'l' sound in English 'lip') lies in the degree of obstruction and the resulting airflow turbulence.
