Laskujärjestyksiä, or order of operations, is a set of rules used in mathematics to determine the sequence in which mathematical expressions are evaluated. Following a consistent order ensures that all mathematicians arrive at the same unique answer for any given expression. The most common mnemonic used to remember the order of operations is PEMDAS, which stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), and Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).

In Finnish schools, the concept is often introduced using the term "laskujärjestys." When evaluating an expression, operations within parentheses or other grouping symbols are performed first. Next, exponents and roots are calculated. Following this, multiplication and division are carried out from left to right as they appear in the expression. Finally, addition and subtraction are performed from left to right.

For example, in the expression 5 + 2 * 3, multiplication takes precedence over addition. Therefore, 2 * 3 is calculated first, resulting in 6, and then 5 is added to 6, giving a final answer of 11. If the expression were written as (5 + 2) * 3, the parentheses would dictate that the addition is performed first, yielding 7, and then multiplied by 3, resulting in 21. Understanding and applying the correct laskujärjestyksiä is fundamental for accurate mathematical calculations.
