Laserablatiivinen, nor commonly referred to as laser ablation, is a process in which a laser beam removes material from a solid surface by means of a highly localized and intense energy delivery. In the procedure, the laser photons are absorbed by the targeted substrate, raising the temperature rapidly, causing melting, vaporization, or ionization of the material. The removed material may be in the form of plasma, vapor, or micro‑scaled droplets depending on the laser parameters and the medium involved.

This technology is widely utilised across many scientific and industrial domains. In medicine, laser ablative therapy is employed for precise removal of pathological tissues such as skin lesions, tumors, or corneal scars, offering high accuracy while sparing surrounding healthy tissue. The ophthalmic sector uses excimer or femtosecond lasers to reshape the cornea in procedures like LASIK. In material science, laser ablation serves for cutting, drilling, surface structuring, and the fabrication of micro‑electromechanical systems (MEMS). The technique is also central to laser sintering and additive manufacturing, where powder layers are selectively fused or ablated to create three‑dimensional components.

Key parameters that influence the efficiency and quality of laser ablation include wavelength, pulse duration, fluence, repetition rate, and beam spot size. Short pulse durations—ranging from nanoseconds to femtoseconds—minimise collateral heat‑affected zones, thereby enabling ultra‑precise material removal. Surface properties such as reflectivity and thermal conductivity also affect ablation thresholds. Fundamentally, the process can be characterised by the ablation depth per pulse and the beam profile evolution over time.

Historically, laser ablation research dates back to the late 1960s following the invention of the first laser sources. Since then, advances in laser technology, from continuous‑wave to ultrafast pulsed systems, have expanded both the range and refinement of ablative applications.
