Landshlutinn is an Icelandic term that translates to "the region" or "the province." It is a general term used to refer to the administrative divisions within Iceland. Historically, Iceland was divided into several such regions. While these traditional divisions still hold some cultural and geographical significance, the current administrative structure of Iceland has evolved.

Today, Iceland is officially divided into eight regions. These regions are primarily used for statistical purposes and by some governmental bodies, such as the police. However, for administrative purposes, Iceland is largely governed by a centralized government, with municipalities having significant local authority. The regions do not have their own elected legislative bodies or significant autonomy.

The eight regions are: Höfuðborgarsvæðið (Capital Region), Suðurnes (Southern Peninsula), Vesturland (West Iceland), Vestfirðir (Westfjords), Norðurland Vestra (Northwest Iceland), Norðurland Eystra (Northeast Iceland), Austurland (East Iceland), and Suðurland (South Iceland). Each region has its own distinct geographical features, culture, and history. For example, the Westfjords are known for their dramatic fjords and isolated communities, while the Capital Region is the most densely populated area. The term landshlutinn is still commonly used in everyday language and in tourism to refer to these general geographical areas of the country.
