Lampelys is a term used to describe the light emitted by any lamp, focusing on the visual and perceptual qualities of that light. It encompasses not only brightness but also color, diffusion, and the ambience created by the lamp’s glow. In Danish and Norwegian usage, lampelys is formed from lampe (lamp) and lys (light) and is often discussed in contexts ranging from interior illumination to lighting design.

Lampelys can arise from a variety of energy sources. Flame-based lamps, such as oil, kerosene, or gas lamps, produce lampelys with warm, often uneven illumination and a spectral profile influenced by the flame. Electric lamps generate lampelys through electrical energy, with further variation introduced by incandescent, fluorescent, halogen, and LED technologies. The term thus covers a broad spectrum of light characteristics, from warm, diffuse glows to cool, highly directional beams.

Key properties used to describe lampelys include luminous intensity (measured in lumens), color temperature (measured in kelvin), and color rendering. Warm lampelys typically have lower color temperatures and a yellowish tint, while cooler lampelys are higher in color temperature and appear more blue-white.
