Laktaattiksi is a term used in some contexts, particularly in Finnish, to refer to lactic acid or lactate. Lactic acid is an organic acid produced during anaerobic respiration, a metabolic process that occurs when oxygen levels are insufficient. This process is common in muscle cells during intense physical activity, leading to the build-up of lactate.

Lactate plays a role in energy metabolism within the body. While often associated with muscle fatigue, it is not solely a waste product. The body can convert lactate back into pyruvate, which can then be used for energy production, or it can be transported to other tissues, such as the liver, for gluconeogenesis (the production of glucose).

The measurement of lactate levels in the blood, known as blood lactate levels, can be used as an indicator of metabolic state and oxygen availability. Elevated lactate levels can suggest increased anaerobic metabolism, which may occur during strenuous exercise, certain medical conditions, or in situations of shock or sepsis. In sports science, lactate threshold is a significant physiological marker, representing the exercise intensity at which lactate begins to accumulate in the blood at a faster rate than it can be cleared.
