A label claim is a statement appearing on a product label that asserts a benefit, property, or effect attributed to the product. Label claims can describe health benefits, nutrient content, performance, or other characteristics and are common on foods, beverages, dietary supplements, cosmetics, and medicines.

Claims are typically categorized as health claims, nutrient content claims, and structure/function claims. Health claims describe a relationship between a food or ingredient and a disease or health-related condition (for example, “calcium helps maintain healthy bones”). Nutrient content claims indicate the level or type of a nutrient (for example, “high in fiber” or “sugar free”). Structure/function claims describe the role of a nutrient or ingredient in affecting the normal structure or function of the body (for example, “supports immune health”) and are common on dietary supplements.

Regulatory oversight of label claims varies by jurisdiction. In the United States, health claims for conventional foods require FDA authorization or listing in an approved program; qualified health claims may appear with qualifying language. Structure/function claims on dietary supplements do not require premarket FDA approval but must be truthful and not misleading, and products must include a disclaimer stating that the FDA has not evaluated the claim. Supplements may not claim to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease. In the European Union, health claims require official authorization and must appear on an EU-approved list, with stringent substantiation requirements.

Companies must ensure claims are truthful, not misleading, and adequately substantiated. Misleading label claims can lead to regulatory actions, recalls, or penalties.
