Lämpötyö, or heat work, is a concept in thermodynamics referring to the energy transferred by a system to its surroundings through heat transfer. Unlike mechanical work, which involves a force acting over a distance, heat transfer occurs due to a temperature difference between systems. When heat flows from a hotter body to a colder body, this energy transfer can be utilized to perform work.

In a thermodynamic cycle, such as that of a heat engine, heat is absorbed from a high-temperature reservoir and partially converted into work, with the remaining heat being rejected to a low-temperature reservoir. The efficiency of such a process is fundamentally limited by the laws of thermodynamics, particularly the second law, which states that it is impossible to achieve a cyclic process whose sole effect is to transfer heat from a colder body to a hotter body, or to convert all heat into work.

The relationship between heat and work is central to understanding energy transformations. While heat is a form of energy transfer driven by temperature gradients, work is energy transferred by mechanical means. In many practical applications, heat is the initial energy source, and its conversion into useful work is the primary goal, as seen in power plants and internal combustion engines.
