Lämpöakkutyyppejä, or types of thermal batteries, refers to various technologies designed to store thermal energy for later use. These systems are crucial for improving energy efficiency in buildings, industrial processes, and renewable energy integration.

One common type is sensible heat storage. This method utilizes materials whose temperature changes when heat is added or removed, without undergoing a phase change. Water is a prime example, often stored in large insulated tanks. Other sensible heat materials include rocks, concrete, and molten salts. The effectiveness of sensible heat storage depends on the specific heat capacity and density of the storage material.

Another significant category is latent heat storage. These systems rely on phase change materials (PCMs). PCMs absorb and release large amounts of thermal energy at a nearly constant temperature during their phase transition, typically from solid to liquid or vice versa. Common PCMs include paraffin waxes, hydrated salts, and fatty acids. Latent heat storage offers higher energy density compared to sensible heat storage, meaning it can store more energy in a smaller volume.

The third main type is thermochemical heat storage. This method stores energy through reversible chemical reactions. When heat is applied, the reaction proceeds in one direction, storing energy in the chemical bonds. When heat is needed, the reaction is reversed, releasing the stored thermal energy. Examples include the use of salt hydrates or metal hydrides. Thermochemical storage generally offers the highest energy densities but can be more complex to implement.

The choice of thermal battery type depends on factors such as the required storage capacity, temperature range, duration of storage, cost, and available space. Each type plays a vital role in optimizing energy utilization and reducing reliance on conventional energy sources.
