Lammityspäiväyksiä, often translated as "heating days" or "degree days," is a metric used in meteorology and building science to quantify the demand for heating or cooling in a particular location over a specific period. It is calculated based on the difference between the average daily temperature and a chosen base temperature. The base temperature is typically set at a level where no heating or cooling is required, commonly around 15-18 degrees Celsius (59-64 degrees Fahrenheit).

When the average daily temperature falls below the base temperature, heating degree days accumulate. Conversely, if the average daily temperature rises above the base temperature, cooling degree days accumulate. The cumulative number of heating or cooling degree days over a period, such as a month or a year, provides an estimate of the energy needed for climate control in buildings. This metric is valuable for energy consumption forecasting, building performance analysis, and understanding the impact of weather patterns on energy demand. Different organizations and regions may use slightly varying methodologies or base temperatures for their calculations, but the fundamental principle of quantifying temperature deviations from a comfortable baseline remains consistent.
