The primary function of a küttesüsteem is to counteract heat loss from a building to its surroundings. Heat is lost through walls, roofs, windows, and floors. The heating system compensates for this loss by adding heat to the indoor air.

There are various types of heating systems. Central heating is common, where a central unit, such as a boiler or furnace, generates heat, which is then distributed throughout the building via pipes carrying hot water or steam, or through ducts carrying warm air. Individual room heaters, like electric radiators or gas fireplaces, are also considered heating systems, albeit for localized heating.

The heat source can vary significantly. Fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and coal have historically been widely used. Renewable energy sources are gaining popularity, including solar thermal systems, geothermal heat pumps, and biomass boilers. Electric heating, using resistance heaters or heat pumps, is another prevalent option.

The distribution method is also diverse. Hydronic systems use radiators or underfloor heating to transfer heat from hot water. Forced-air systems use fans to circulate warm air through ducts. Radiant heating directly warms surfaces or objects, which then radiate heat into the space.

Effective management of a küttesüsteem involves controls such as thermostats, which regulate temperature by turning the system on and off or adjusting its output. Proper maintenance is essential for efficiency, safety, and longevity of the heating system.
