Közegbl is a fictional unit of environmental information used in speculative discussions of ecology and information theory. It is defined as the amount of information required to describe the state of an environment within a specified spatial and temporal resolution.

The name draws on the Hungarian közeg, meaning environment or milieu, with the suffix -bl introduced by authors to denote a unit in toy models. The term is not part of established scientific standards and has no official definition in real-world data models.

In hypothetical models, the közegbl quantifies environmental complexity: for a region of fixed size, higher variability or more dynamic processes increase the közegbl count; at a given resolution, a region with rich biophysical detail would require more közegbls than a uniform region. It is deliberately informal and non-standardized.

Usage and significance: the concept is used in thought experiments to illustrate limits of data compression, AI environmental modelling, and cross-model comparisons of ecological information content. It helps discuss how much information is needed to specify environmental states and how this scales with resolution and time.
