Kötőszövetet, meaning connective tissue in Hungarian, refers to a group of tissues in the body that support, connect, or separate different types of tissues and organs. It is one of the four basic types of animal tissue, alongside epithelial tissue, muscle tissue, and nervous tissue. Connective tissue is found throughout the body and plays a crucial role in maintaining its structure and function.

The primary components of connective tissue are cells and an extracellular matrix. The extracellular matrix is composed of protein fibers, such as collagen, elastin, and reticular fibers, embedded in a ground substance, which is often gel-like. The specific type and arrangement of these components vary greatly depending on the function of the particular connective tissue.

There are several broad categories of connective tissue. Loose connective tissue, also known as areolar tissue, is found beneath epithelia and surrounds organs, blood vessels, and nerves, providing support and cushioning. Dense connective tissue, with its higher proportion of fibers, forms structures like tendons and ligaments, offering strength and flexibility. Specialized connective tissues include adipose tissue (fat), cartilage, bone, and blood. Adipose tissue stores energy and insulates the body. Cartilage provides flexible support in joints and other areas. Bone provides rigid support and protects internal organs. Blood, while often considered a connective tissue, is unique in having a fluid extracellular matrix. The diverse functions of connective tissues underscore their fundamental importance in the overall anatomy and physiology of organisms.
