The lacrimal apparatus, encompassing the tear production and drainage components, begins with the lacrimal gland, which secretes tears. Tears then spread across the ocular surface through blinking. Drainage is initiated by the puncta, small openings located on the inner margin of the eyelids. These puncta lead to the canaliculi, tiny tubes that transport tears towards the lacrimal sac. The lacrimal sac is a reservoir situated in a groove on the medial side of the orbit. From the lacrimal sac, tears descend through the nasolacrimal duct, a passage that empties into the nasal cavity. This connection explains why crying often results in a runny nose.
