Käyttöarvoviitteet, or "use-value references" in English, is a concept that can be understood within the context of economics and valuation. For example, water has a very high use value in that it is essential for survival. However, in many developed societies, its exchange value is relatively low due to its abundance and availability. Conversely, a diamond might have a high exchange value due to scarcity and social desirability, but its use value for survival is minimal.

The distinction between use value and exchange value is central to certain economic theories, particularly those that emerged from classical political economy. It underscores that the price a consumer is willing to pay is not solely dictated by the cost of production or market demand, but also by how much they personally benefit from possessing or using the item. Understanding use-value references helps to explain consumer behavior and the multifaceted nature of value in economic systems.
