Kähedusele refers to a hoarse voice, a change in vocal quality characterized by breathiness, roughness, or a strained sound. This alteration in voice production typically arises from issues affecting the vocal cords, the folds of tissue in the larynx responsible for generating sound.

Common causes of kähedusele include laryngitis, an inflammation of the larynx often brought on by viral infections like the common cold or flu. Overuse or misuse of the voice, such as prolonged shouting or singing without proper technique, can also lead to vocal cord strain and hoarseness. Environmental irritants like smoke, pollution, or dry air can irritate the vocal cords and contribute to kähedusele.

Medical conditions can also manifest as a hoarse voice. These might include vocal cord nodules, polyps, or cysts, which are growths on the vocal cords that interfere with their vibration. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can cause stomach acid to back up into the esophagus and potentially irritate the larynx, leading to hoarseness. Neurological disorders affecting the nerves that control the vocal cords can also result in voice changes. In rarer cases, kähedusele can be a symptom of more serious conditions, such as laryngeal cancer.

The duration of kähedusele can vary. Acute hoarseness, often linked to infections or voice strain, usually resolves within a few days or weeks as the underlying cause is treated or the vocal cords recover. Persistent hoarseness, lasting for more than two to three weeks, warrants medical attention to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Diagnosis often involves a physical examination, assessment of vocal history, and sometimes specialized tests like laryngoscopy.
