Kysyntätarjonta, often translated as supply and demand, is a fundamental economic principle that explains how the price of a good or service is determined in a market economy. It describes the relationship between the quantity of a commodity that producers are willing to sell at various prices and the quantity that consumers are willing to buy at various prices.

The law of demand states that, all else being equal, as the price of a good or service increases, the quantity demanded will decrease, and conversely, as the price decreases, the quantity demanded will increase. This inverse relationship is typically represented by a downward-sloping demand curve. Factors influencing demand include consumer income, tastes and preferences, the price of related goods (substitutes and complements), and expectations about future prices.

The law of supply, on the other hand, posits that, all else being equal, as the price of a good or service increases, the quantity supplied will increase, and as the price decreases, the quantity supplied will decrease. This direct relationship is depicted by an upward-sloping supply curve. Factors affecting supply include the cost of production (labor, materials, energy), technology, government policies (taxes and subsidies), and the number of sellers in the market.

The interaction of supply and demand in a market leads to an equilibrium price and quantity. Equilibrium occurs at the point where the quantity supplied equals the quantity demanded. If the price is above equilibrium, there will be a surplus of goods, leading sellers to lower prices. If the price is below equilibrium, there will be a shortage, prompting sellers to raise prices. Changes in the underlying factors influencing either supply or demand will cause shifts in their respective curves, leading to a new equilibrium point.
