Kynttiläsoluja, known scientifically as flame cells or protonephridia, are the characteristic excretory and osmoregulatory organs found in various invertebrate phyla, including flatworms, rotifers, and some annelids. These structures are the simplest form of a kidney-like organ in the animal kingdom.

A kynttiläsollu consists of a small, bulb-shaped cell that contains a tuft of cilia. The cilia beat rhythmically, creating a current that draws waste products and excess fluid from the surrounding tissues into the cell. These filtered materials then pass through a tubule that opens to the exterior of the organism, typically through pores. The beating of the cilia is often described as resembling the flickering of a candle flame, hence the common name.

The primary functions of kynttiläsoluja are osmoregulation, the regulation of the internal water balance, and excretion, the removal of metabolic waste products. They are particularly important in freshwater invertebrates, which tend to absorb water from their environment due to osmosis. Kynttiläsoluja help these organisms to expel this excess water and maintain a stable internal environment.

While kynttiläsoluja are effective for simple organisms with low metabolic rates and limited body surface area, they are not efficient enough for more complex animals with higher metabolic demands. These more advanced animals have evolved more sophisticated excretory systems, such as metanephridia and kidneys. Nonetheless, kynttiläsoluja represent a crucial evolutionary step in the development of excretory systems.
