Kylmäkaasuja, often translated as "cold gases" or "cryogenic gases," refers to gases that are cooled to very low temperatures, typically below -150 degrees Celsius (-238 degrees Fahrenheit). At these extreme temperatures, many substances that are normally gaseous at room temperature exist as liquids or even solids. The process of cooling gases to such low temperatures is known as cryogenics.

Common examples of kylmäkaasuja include nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and helium. Liquid nitrogen, for instance, is a widely used coolant in scientific research, medicine, and industry. Its extremely low boiling point of -196 degrees Celsius makes it ideal for preserving biological samples and for rapid cooling applications. Liquid oxygen is utilized in medical settings for respiratory support and in various industrial processes. Argon, another inert gas, finds applications in welding and lighting. Helium, with its exceptionally low boiling point of -269 degrees Celsius, is crucial for cooling superconducting magnets in MRI machines and particle accelerators.

The handling and storage of kylmäkaasuja require specialized equipment and strict safety protocols due to their extreme temperatures and the potential hazards associated with rapid expansion upon warming. These gases are typically stored and transported in insulated containers called cryogenic dewars. When exposed to warmer environments, liquid cryogenic gases can rapidly vaporize, creating a significant pressure increase. Inhalation of high concentrations of some cryogenic gases, like nitrogen, can displace oxygen and lead to asphyxiation.
