This cooling process results in significant changes to the gas's properties, making it behave differently from a gas at ambient temperature.

The most common application of kylmäkaasu is in refrigeration and cryogenic technologies. When a gas is cooled to these extremely low temperatures, it can be used to absorb heat from its surroundings, thereby cooling them down. Examples include refrigerants used in freezers and air conditioning systems, as well as liquid nitrogen and liquid helium, which are essential for scientific research, medical imaging (like MRIs), and industrial processes requiring ultra-low temperatures.

The physical state of kylmäkaasu can vary. At sufficiently low temperatures, many gases will liquefy, becoming liquids such as liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen.
