Modern engines have sophisticated systems to manage cold starts. Glow plugs in diesel engines preheat the combustion chamber to aid ignition. In gasoline engines, fuel injectors deliver a richer mixture, and the engine control unit may adjust ignition timing to compensate for cooler temperatures. The catalytic converter also takes longer to reach its optimal operating temperature, meaning emissions are higher during the initial phase of a cold start.

Frequent or prolonged cold starts can contribute to increased engine wear over time due to inadequate lubrication and higher stress. Driving gently immediately after a cold start allows the engine components to warm up gradually and reach their operating temperatures, minimizing this wear and improving fuel efficiency.
