Kvartsittia is a Finnish geological term referring to quartzite, a hard, metamorphic rock composed primarily of quartz. It is formed when sandstone, which is mostly quartz grains, is subjected to intense heat and pressure over geological timescales. This process causes the quartz grains to recrystallize and fuse together, creating a very dense and durable rock. The original sedimentary structures of the sandstone, such as bedding planes, may be preserved in the quartzite, although they can also be deformed or obliterated depending on the intensity of metamorphism.

Kvartsittia is typically white or light-colored, but impurities within the original sandstone can lead to a variety of colors, including pink, red, yellow, green, or blue. These colors are often due to the presence of iron oxides or other minerals. Due to its hardness and resistance to weathering, kvartsittia is often found as prominent geological features like hills and mountain ranges. It is also a valuable building material, used historically and presently for construction, as well as for decorative purposes and in the production of crushed stone. Its exceptional durability makes it a long-lasting material.
