Kvartsikullan is a term used in mining and geology to refer to gold-bearing quartz, a common form of ore in which metallic gold occurs within quartz veins. The name combines kvarts, the Estonian word for quartz, with kulla, the genitive form of gold.

Geology and formation: Kvartsikullan typically forms in hydrothermal vein systems where silica-rich fluids deposit quartz as they move through rocks. In these veins, gold may occur as native metal or as inclusions in sulfide minerals such as pyrite or arsenopyrite. The quartz provides a host framework and helps concentrate gold through hydrothermal processes. Ore grades can vary widely; some veins contain visible gold, while others require processing to recover microscopic particles.

Occurrence and mining: Auriferous quartz is found in many gold-bearing regions worldwide. It is mined through hard rock mining, followed by crushing and processing to separate gold from quartz. Processing methods commonly include gravity concentration to recover larger gold particles, flotation to remove sulfides, and cyanidation to dissolve and recover remaining gold.
