Kvarcitíválódással, also known as quartzite formation or silicification, is a geological process by which sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstone, are transformed into quartzite. This transformation occurs under conditions of heat and pressure, typically deep within the Earth's crust. The key agent in this process is silica, usually in the form of quartz.

During kvarcitíválódással, the original quartz grains of the sandstone recrystallize and fuse together. This recrystallization can be facilitated by hydrothermal fluids circulating through the rock. These fluids are rich in dissolved silica, which precipitates between the original quartz grains, effectively cementing them together. As the process intensifies, the original pore spaces in the sandstone are largely eliminated, and the rock becomes a dense, hard, and interlocking mass of quartz crystals.

The resulting quartzite is a metamorphic rock with a granular texture. It is considerably harder and more durable than the original sandstone. This durability makes quartzite resistant to weathering and erosion, which is why quartzite formations often form prominent topographical features. The color of quartzite can vary widely depending on the presence of impurities, such as iron oxides, which can give it shades of red, pink, yellow, or brown.
