Kvantumkulcselosítás is a method for distributing cryptographic keys using the principles of quantum mechanics. It offers a theoretically unbreakable way to secure communications, as any attempt to eavesdrop on the key exchange would inevitably disturb the quantum state of the transmitted particles, alerting the communicating parties to the presence of an intruder. The most common approach to kvantumkulcselosítás is based on the properties of photons, the fundamental particles of light.

One prominent protocol is BB84, named after its inventors Charles Bennett and Gilles Brassard. In BB84, the sender, often called Alice, encodes bits of the secret key into the polarization states of photons. She randomly chooses between two different bases for encoding each bit. The receiver, Bob, then randomly chooses a basis to measure the incoming photons. After receiving all photons, Alice and Bob publicly compare which bases they used for each photon. They discard any bits where their bases did not match. The remaining bits, where their bases did match, form the shared secret key. An eavesdropper, Eve, attempting to intercept the photons would have to measure them, which would necessarily alter their quantum state and introduce detectable errors when Alice and Bob compare their results.

While kvantumkulcselosítás provides an unparalleled level of security against eavesdropping, its practical implementation faces challenges. These include the cost of specialized hardware, the limited range over which quantum states can be reliably transmitted, and the need for robust error correction mechanisms. Despite these hurdles, ongoing research and development are steadily advancing the field, bringing the promise of truly secure communication closer to reality.
