Kvantkõnekäike, also known as quantum communication, refers to the transmission of information using quantum properties of particles, primarily photons, to achieve secure and potentially instantaneous communication. Unlike classical communication methods, which rely on electrical or optical signals, quantum communication leverages principles from quantum mechanics, such as superposition and entanglement, to enable new forms of data transfer and security.

One of the most well-known applications of kvantkõnekäike is quantum key distribution (QKD), a method for securely exchanging cryptographic keys between two parties. QKD exploits the quantum no-cloning theorem, which states that it is impossible to copy an unknown quantum state perfectly. This ensures that any eavesdropping attempt on the quantum channel would disturb the quantum states, alerting the legitimate users to potential security breaches. Protocols like BB84, named after its inventors Bennett and Brassard, are foundational in this field.

Quantum communication also explores the concept of quantum teleportation, where the quantum state of a particle is transmitted from one location to another without physically moving the particle itself. This process relies on entangled particles and classical communication to reconstruct the state at the destination. While not true teleportation of matter or information in the sci-fi sense, it demonstrates the potential for secure and instantaneous transfer of quantum information over long distances.

In Estonia and other regions, research into kvantkõnekäike is advancing through initiatives like the Quantum Technologies Flagship program, which aims to develop practical applications for quantum technologies. Estonia has also been involved in international collaborations, such as the Quantum Internet Alliance, to build a global infrastructure for quantum-secured communication networks. These efforts highlight the growing interest in harnessing quantum phenomena for enhanced security, computation, and connectivity.
