Kuuvarjutus, also known as a lunar eclipse, is a celestial event that occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow on the Moon. This phenomenon can only happen during a full moon phase. There are three types of lunar eclipses: total, partial, and penumbral.

A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes completely through the Earth's umbra, the darkest part of its shadow. During this event, the Moon appears to turn a reddish hue, often referred to as a "blood moon," due to the scattering of sunlight through Earth's atmosphere.

A partial lunar eclipse occurs when only a part of the Moon enters the Earth's umbra. In this case, the Moon appears to have a dark patch on its surface.

A penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the Earth's penumbra, the lighter part of its shadow. This type of eclipse is often difficult to observe because the change in the Moon's brightness is subtle.

Lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on the night side of the Earth, provided the weather conditions are clear. They are safe to view with the naked eye, unlike solar eclipses. The frequency of lunar eclipses varies, with about two to four occurring each year.
