Kuulonsuojain is a Finnish term referring to hearing protection devices. These devices are designed to reduce the level of sound reaching the wearer's ears, thereby preventing noise-induced hearing loss. They are essential in environments where noise levels exceed safe thresholds, often encountered in industrial settings, construction sites, shooting ranges, or during loud recreational activities.

There are several types of kuulonsuojain. Earplugs, known as "korvatulpat" in Finnish, are inserted directly into the ear canal. They come in various forms, including disposable foam plugs, reusable silicone or thermoplastic plugs, and custom-molded options. Earmuffs, or "kuulokkeet," cover the entire outer ear, creating a seal around it. These typically consist of two earcups connected by a headband. Combination hearing protection, which integrates both earplugs and earmuffs, is also available for maximum protection.

The effectiveness of a kuulonsuojain is measured by its Noise Reduction Rating (NRR) or Single Number Rating (SNR), indicating how much the sound level is reduced in decibels.
