kuritega

Kuritega is a commune in the Kayanza Province of Burundi. The commune is one of the 17 communes of the Kayanza Province and it is situated in the north of Burundi. The commune is bordered by the Mount Seneli to the north, the Lakera Commune to the south, the Bururi Province to the east, and the Munkwyero Commune to the west.

The geography of Kuritega Commune is primarily rural, with hills, valleys, and mountains. The terrain is dense with thick forests and The savannah type of vegetation is also found in Kuritega. The vegetation is mainly dominated by the natural forest that covers more than two thirds of the areas. The forest in this area is densely covered with valuable tree species.

Kuritega is predominantly composed of ethnic Bari people with about a 60% population, the Tutsi ethnic group account for around 20% population, and the rest are comprised of Hima. Agriculture is the main economic activity in the commune. Subsistence farming is practiced by the majority of the people with crops like maize, beans, sweet potatoes and other food crops being the major. The local economy is also supported by small-scale livestock farming.
